King Dasaratha and His Retinue Proceed to Rama's Wedding: Folio from the Shangri Ramayana Series (Style II)

India, Punjab Hills, kingdom of Mankot

Not on view

King Dasaratha, surrounded by his army, is shown traveling by chariot to the city of Mithila where Rama will marry Sita. Mounted musicians playing trumpets and drums lead the procession, which includes the four divisions of the army and sages who ride in a chariot at lower left. This folio was likely painted at the court of Bahu, which broke free from the adjacent kingdom of Jammu. Characteristic of this manuscript series is the deep yellow color field in the background that serves to silhouette the figures and push them toward the front of the picture plane.
