Lakshmana and Sugriva Being Carried by Palanquin to Receive Rama's Blessings: Folio from the dispersed “Mankot" Ramayana series

India, Punjab Hills, kingdom of Mankot or Nurpur

Not on view

Here Lakshmana and Sugriva gesture and engage in conversation as they are carried through the forest on a palanquin painted in silver. Leading the entourage are Hanuman and the bear king Jambavan. The swirling clouds and deep green background of the Dandaka forest indicate this painting is from the long Mankot Ramayana series. The elaborate jewelry and the articulation of the figures’ eyes suggest an artist from the court of Nurpur may have participated in the creation of this series.
