A Hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus)

Hans Hoffmann German

Not on view

This endearing picture dates from a time when the detailed study and portrayal of flora and fauna was increasingly of interest. Due to the skills required to replicate every minute detail of a specific animal or plant, certain artists, such as Hans Hoffmann and Joris Hoefnagel became specialists in this area. Hoffmann painted portraits and religious subjects but is best remembered for his highly finished drawings after nature. Here, however, his inspiration was not nature itself but detailed studies made by his famous predecessor Albrecht Dürer, whose works were still admired and coveted. Several collectors in Nuremberg, the hometown of both artists, owned such Dürer studies.
