Head of a Statue of Senwosret I

First Intermediate Period - Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

This lively head of a pharaoh can be ascribed to the second ruler of the Twelfth Dynasty. The rectangular shape of the face and the taut-lipped, sharply delineated, smiling mouth are typical for representations of this king. The image’s assertive vigor matches well the description of the young Senwosret when he was advised of his father’s death in The Tale of Sinuhe: "Not a moment did he wait; the falcon flew off . . ."
