Following Egyptian Mamluk invasions along the Mediterranean coast in the mid-thirteenth century, Armenian monks fled to Italian cities, contributing to Italo-Armenian artistic exchanges. In this work from Perugia, the artist modified the traditional Armenian format for evangelist portraits, using European models and moving the portraits into the headpieces over the text. The evangelists’ have northern European complexions, light-colored hair, and tonsures (shaven patches on the top of the head) resembling those of Roman Catholic priests.
