Mainz Bible
Engraver Johann Theodor de Bry Netherlandish
Not on view
The Mainz Bible was first copied by Armenian artists in L’vov in 1619, introducing new Western European iconography and compositions to Armenian art. The L’vov images later became models for a group of manuscripts produced in the mid-seventeenth century in New Julfa. Here, De Bry depicted the creation of Adam, Adam naming of the animals, the creation of Eve, and Adam and Eve’s fall. These images inspired Hayrapet’s illuminations in the adjacent manuscript.
