Portable diptych sundial

Paulus Reinman German

Not on view

This multifunctional sundial incorporates a compass, provides the time in two different twenty-four-hour systems (Babylonian hours, beginning at sunrise, and Italian hours, beginning at sunset), and indicates the number of daylight hours throughout the year. It can be used from Gdansk (Danzig) to the Greek island of Corfu, as the latitude table on the vertical leaf indicates. The engravings include two enchanting scenes of musicians and lovers.
