While Remington's principal theater of action was the American West, he relished various forms of outdoor adventure. In December 1889 he traveled to Canada on a moose-hunting expedition with his journalist friend Julian Ralph. In Ontario they hired two Native guides and a sleigh driver to accompany them to a feeding ground for the animals known as "Antoine's moose-yard." Remington and Ralph got their moose and brought back tales that resulted in a story for Harper's Monthly in October 1890, their first joint effort for the eminent publication. Remington relied on oil and pencil sketches as well as photographs to create the illustrations, which were then reproduced as wood engravings.
