The 1890s represent a golden age for the American art poster, and no one epitomizes the moment more than Edward Penfield, head of the art department at Harper & Brothers. Between 1893 and 1899 he produced a critically acclaimed series of posters for Harper's Monthly as well as the occasional composition to promote a book published by the firm. In this advertisement for Remington's first anthology, the bold, efficient design and evocative lettering are intended to appeal to a cultivated readership, inspiring interest in armchair travel to unfamiliar lands west of the Mississippi River.
