Embroidered Shawl

India

Not on view

This shawl is made of the finest wool fibers, which come from the Tibetan antelope (chiru). Approximately 10 micrometers in diameter, these fibers are extremely difficult to make into threads strong enough to endure the weaving process. However, Kashmiri weavers spun and plied Shahtoosh fibers with great skill, creating exquisite shawls.
