Daido Moriyama: Hunter

September 22, 1999–January 2, 2000

Exhibition Overview

These forty vintage prints by Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama (b. 1938) evoke the conflicts and the vitality of post–World War II Japan, as Western mores and mass media invaded traditional ways of life. Little known in America, the works first appeared in Moriyama's book Hunter (1972)—a poetic sequence of dark, intense photographs shot from the shadows and from the windows of a moving car.
