Jatai Pakee

India, West Bengal

Not on view

In the Ramayana, Rama’s bird-devotee Jatayu attempts to prevent Ravana’s abduction of Sita by obstructing the departure of Ravana’s chariot, seen clasped in the bird’s mighty beak. This was also a favored theme in Bengal narrative scroll paintings (pata). The treatment of the bird closely resembles depictions of the crane-demon (rakshasa) Bakasura whom the young Krishna slays by tearing his jaw apart. Inscribed in Bengali and English.
