Civil War spring lancet in book-form box

On View Gallery Watson Library

This book box was custom made to fit the surgical lancet it contains. A lancet is a sharp-pointed, two-edged surgical knife used for bloodletting. Carved from solid maple, the box is decorated with features which make it look like a real mottled calfskin binding, including spine bands, incised blind tooling, and stained patterning. While other book-form lancet cases were made, no two are alike.
