During the Victorian period, Minton, the Staffordshire-based industrial manufacturer, introduced a myriad of historically inspired designs into British middle and upper-middle class homes. The French designer Léon Arnoux looked to the French Renaissance as inspiration for Minton’s line of Henri Deux wares, drawing upon the intricate inlaid slip motifs found on Saint Porchaire earthenware of the sixteenth century. The salamander seen at the top of the salt is a reference to the royal emblem of Francis I.
