This very fine flintlock gun is of the same period as another French gun by Le Faure and Mollier in the Met's collection (acc. no. 1990.114.1) and it is stylistically related to it in the ornamentation of its stock, barrel, and mounts. However, its mounts are not of steel, but of cast and chased silver, and its stock shows greater restraint in the use of silver wire inlay. The rear of its lock is chiseled with a design borrowed from the 1705 edition of an influential album of patterns for gunmakers, which also provided the inpsiration for the decoration of elements of the related gun. Very few works by Charrière appear to survive.
