Rt. Hon-ble. Charles Earl Cornwallis, KB, from the "European Magazine"
Not on view
This portrait show Cornwallis facing front, nearly half-length, his head turned to the left while glancing towards the viewer. His jacket is open over a waistcoat fastened with two buttons, dark neckerchief and ruffled shirt. The oval image rests on a stone ledge and is surrounded by emblems, including spears, cannon and cannon balls, standards, laurel branch and wreath. The "KB" that follows his name should be "KG" since Cornwallis was appointed a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter in 1786 (KB indicates that he was a Knight of the Bath).
