Interior of Box

Photographer Harry Burton British

Not on view

Harry Burton’s responsibilities included documenting the context of finds from the tomb of Tutankhamun, including the interiors of boxes. Upon opening the box here, the excavators were met with disappointment. It contained only packing material, which indicated that the original content had been fragile. It was probably taken by ancient thieves. Howard Carter, the director of the excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun, wondered if glass vessels had been inside, and his notes end with the exclamation “DAM!!!”
