Coat of Arms of Ippolito Aldobrandini

ca. 1585–92
Not on view
Large thesis print with the coat of arms of Ippolito Aldobrandini. It is surmounted by a cardinal's hat, rather than a papal crown, suggesting the print dates from before his election to the papacy in 1592 (from then on, he is known as Pope Clement VIII). The coat of arms is accompanied by three personifications, each depicted with an orb. Two can be identified as Justice and Geometry. It is not entirely clear what the third figure represents. Two mottos have been added onto panels below the personifications. One reads: "SINE VMBRA" and the other "HVIVS CLEMETIA [sic] COELI".
