Two images of old St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York appear here. The first building was gutted by a fire on October 7, 1866 that spread from a nearby shop. Even though a new, much larger St. Patrick's was already under construction on Fifth Avenue, the older church was restored under the direction of architect Henry Engelbert, mass celebrated on April 1, 1867 and the building reopened in 1868. It became a parish church when the new Fifth Avenue cathedral opened in 1879. This print comes from a series of images of churches published by Eckstein & Parr (also see 54.90.1695).
