St. John's River, Florida
Thomas Moran American, born England
Not on view
View across water with an island at right with palm trees and a large building. A boat is seen in the foreground, and the buildings of a settlement appear in the left distance. The print probably represents a stretch of the St. Johns River near Jacksonville, Florida’s fastest growing city at that time. Moran had visited Florida in February 1877 for Scribner’s "Monthly Magazine," to illustrate an article on Fort George Island, in the river's mouth. Here, several years later, he developed a sketch made on that trip into another etching.
