Gérôme cemented his reputation as one of the most popular artists of the nineteenth century in large part thanks to his collaboration with the dealer-publisher Adolphe Goupil, who commissioned reproductions of his paintings in a multitude of formats. This work was among the eighty four selected for a two-volume publication in 1877−78. The plates were sold individually as well, and many were reprinted until 1909. The painting reproduced by the photogravure dates from 1871 and exemplifies Gérôme's popular Orientalist compositions of the period. The artist staged such scenes with models in his studio, dressing them in costumes from his collection, and referencing photographs taken during his travels in Egypt and Anatolia to paint the backgrounds.
