This exhibition catalog includes an introductory essay by James Porter, as well as a checklist of over 100 works by 48 artists, along with biographies, awards, and exhibition histories for each artist. Artists in the exhibition include Romare Bearden, David Driskell, Melvin Edwards, Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, Noah Purifoy, and Betye Saar.


The cover image is Jacob Lawrence’s Library III, painted in 1960 as part of the Harlem Series and one of several paintings Lawrence created in appreciation of the Harlem Branch of the New York Public Library, which he frequently used as a resource for African American history.

The exhibition was curated by Frederick Wright and co-sponsored by the California Arts Commission at UCLA’s Dickson Art Center in 1966. The following year it travelled to University of California, Davis, Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego, and the Oakland Art Museum.
