Armstrong’s book cover designs often evoke the subject of the book. For this celebrated series of illustrated poetry collections by Paul Dunbar (1872-1906), Armstrong conjures the twilight hour with a whimsical design depicting a gold-stamped crescent moon shining above stylized cotton blossoms. This volume is part of a four-book series of Dunbar’s poetry for which Armstrong designed three of the four covers; Alice Morse designed the other. Armstrong also provided the page borders and half-title page decorations. The book includes photographic prints by the Hampton Institute Camera Club.
