Not on view

Margaret Armstrong did not sign all of her works. This unsigned binding is attributed to her because of its similarity with other known Armstrong designs published by Bobbs-Merrill and its distinctive lettering style. Most of Armstrong’s commissions were with three major publishing houses: Bobbs-Merrill, Putnam, and Scribner’s. Armstrong began her career at McClurg in the late 1880s and produced half of her book cover designs–about 270 books–for Scribner’s. In all, she worked for twenty-one different publishers including Dodd, Mead & Company, Harper & Brothers, Houghton Mifflin, James Pott & Co. and Thomas Y. Crowell.
