Count Roupee -- Vide Hyde Park

James Gillray British
Publisher Hannah Humphrey British

Not on view

Gillray here caricatures a wealthy member of the East India Company, Paul Benfield who made a fortune as a trader, banker and contractor before, eventually, losing everything through speculation. His impetuous character is suggested by the way he gallops through London's Hype Park, with the new Knightsbridge Barracks in the distance.
