Plainte Moresque (Moorish Lament)

Edouard Manet French

Not on view

This is a rare proof of a cover for sheet music. It would certainly have conjured memories for Degas of listening to the Catalan composer and guitarist Jaime Bosch perform at the Manets’ apartment in the late 1860s. One of two known impressions of the first state, this lithograph features hand-drawn lettering that was subsequently replaced with typography in the published state. The inscription “Bon à tirer,” initialed by the artist, indicates that Manet considered it ready to print.

*This work was in Degas’s collection.
