Tiraz Tapestry Textile Fragment

Not on view

This is a fragment of tiraz, a type of textile embellished with a decorated, inscribed band. Woven in royal workshops, tiraz traditionally featured inscriptions that named the ruler. Over time, the inscriptions became more generic, and isolated single or paired bands multiplied into tiers of decoration, as seen here. The inscription on this fragment, woven in Egypt, appears to read "help from God." Though few examples of tiraz survive from medieval Spain, inscribed textiles were an important component of Iberian production.
