Not on view

In this half-length portrait the sitter faces the viewer, with his body directed to the right. His hair is powdered and tied with a large bow. He wears a black ribbon around his neck and a lace neckpiece, a watered silk sash across his chest, and holds a hat under his left arm. The Duke de Nivernois was French Ambassador to England at the end of the Seven Years War and helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris (ratified on February 10, 1763). This portrait records his appearance around that time.
