Amy Arbus American

Not on view

Between 1980 and 1990, Arbus made photographs of people on the sidewalks of downtown New York City for "On the Street," a monthly fashion feature in the Village Voice. Decades before the rise of popular "street style" blogs on the Internet, Arbus captured the creative and often eccentric ways in which local artists, actors, musicians, and scenesters expressed themselves through their clothing and sense of personal style. More than fashion photographs, they are environmental portraits that vividly capture the gritty glamour of New York's vibrant downtown scene in the 1980s.
