Relieve the Wounded Soldiers

Liu Lun Chinese

Not on view

In this print maimed and sick soldiers in disarray present a picture of helpless suffering during the Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). The subtitle at the bottom—“A True Sketch of Yeh-Pei Front”—indicates the artist’s intent to provide a truthful visual record of the ravages of war in northern Guangdong Province. An English translation of the full title provided an appeal for international humanitarian support. Liu Lun, a student at the Guangzhou Municipal School of Fine Arts in the early 1930s and an active member of the Modern Prints Society, zealously participated in anti-Japanese resistance efforts.
