The print was used to illustrate an article by Anne Isabella Ritchie, née Thackeray (1837–1919) lamenting the recent redevelopment and embankment at Chelsea, London. In Severn's etching "boats are moored, some upon the mud-bank, others upon a great wooden raft that lies upon the mud ... a vaguely sketched figure leans against the posts of the embankment, watching some men who are overhauling a rope below." The former rivershore captured by Severn sloped gently up to the main thoroughfare of Cheyne Walk which charactised "this quiet place by the river," overlooked by the square tower of Chelsea Old Church.
