Fishing Boat at Sea

Anton Melbye Danish

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690

Melbye originally had ambitions of a naval career before turning to shipbuilding and then finally marine painting. He studied with C. W. Eckersberg at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art and by 1840 had already earned some acclaim for his seascapes. He traveled extensively, occasionally under the patronage of the Danish king. Late in life, he turned increasingly to drawing in charcoal and chalks, such as in this depiction of a boat tossed in rough seas, which also displays Melbye’s interest in the dramatic atmospheric effects of inclement weather.
