Narcissus

Etienne Delaune French
After Giovanni Battista di Jacopo Italian

Not on view

Engraving with a representation of Narcissus by Delaune, after Rosso Fiorentino [Giovanni Battista di Jacopo]. In a lanscape with Ancient ruins, Narcissus kneels, holding his hair up with one hand, looking at his reflection on the water of the basin of a fountain. This episode occurs after Narcissus has been hunting, indicated by the horn tied to his waist. The scene is accompanied by an inscription from Ovid's Metamorphoses, in Latin, which translates to "What I want I have. My riches make me poor."
