Ely Cathedral

Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. Ely Cathedral, located in the city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, ranks among England's most architecturally distinguished medieval buildings exemplifying both Gothic and Romanesque (Norman) styles. In this panoramic landscape, Bone dramatically presents Ely Cathedral as the central focal point seen across an expanse of plowed fields. In the foreground, he included a horse-drawn wagon approaching a farm shed at the lower left; along the road at the center, a lone figure stands at a gate to the field. Bone defined the right edge of this scene by drawing a tall tree, which helps direct the viewer's gaze to other details, such as, the tiny plowman and two-horse team working in the field.
