The Dogana, Venice

Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. In this view of Venice, Bone presents the Dogana da Mar (Customs House) at right, as seen across the San Marco Basin. Numerous sailboats fill the canal between the Dogana and the island of the Giudecca. The dome and facade of the Church of Santissimo Redentore (known as Il Redentore) is visible in the central background. Two gondolas are shown crossing the lagoon.
