Southampton, from Eling

Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. This print shows a few fishing boats along the rustic waterfront of Eling, a village near the port city of Southampton, which is faintly indicated in the distance. Here, Bone reveals his preference for showing an ordinary scene in southern England, rather than presenting a grand coastal vista.
