Ultimately its towpath became the roadbed for a rail line following the same course. In 1840, the treasurer of the commonweath underwrote the guarantee of the state on certain bonds amounting to $123,026.66 to facilitiate the construction of bridges along the James River. This is a five dollar denomination of this loan.
