During the Civil War, provision for the Enrolled Missouri Militia was made possible by an act approved on March 9, 1863. The governor was authorized to issue State bonds known as "Union Military Bonds," in order to pay for the militia in sums of one, three, five, ten, and twenty dollars each. This amount could not exceed three million dollars and was made payable at the office of the treasurer in Jefferson City, Missouri.
