Geldzahler, who is pictured driving the car in this bucolic scene, was a great friend of artists and also the first contemporary curator for The Met, assembling, for example, the groundbreaking, centennial exhibition "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940–1970." The donor of this work left her post at one of New York’s foremost galleries to assist Geldzahler on his show. This work thus marks Geldzahler’s close relationship with contemporary practitioners (many of the gifts he received from them are already in the collection), as well as the close bond between Geldzahler and the donor, who was dedicated to her friend and collaborator until the end.
