Pectoral

Huastec style/Mexica

Not on view

Although the openwork shell pectoral resembles Huastec pectorals, its low-relief carving style and discovery near the Templo Mayor similarly suggest Mexica artists created it, deliberately emulating the Huastec style and iconography. Such works signal the Mexica reverence for greenstone and for antiquities from illustrious civilizations of the past.
