Tabard with Pelicans

Chimú

Not on view

This garment’s vivid colors and plush surface beckon the hand as well as the mind—note the visual pun of birds made from feathers. The artist cut and trimmed individual feathers to heighten the outlines of pairs of small erect blue birds, their beaks held horizontally as if at attention, shouldering a litter bearing a gigantic blue pelican. With a slit in the middle for the head, such garments would have been donned by high-status men.
