Note in graphite in modern hand at bottom right of sheet: The original plate was the private property of Pope Pius IX. Proofs were never in commerce, the Pope occasionally gave one to some friend. He bequeathed the plate to King Oscar of Sweden, in whose cabinet it now is. No further impressions can ever be taken from it. This proof bears the private stamp of Pius IX.
