Issey Miyake, New York
Irving Penn American

In the 1980s, Penn began an unusually fertile long-distance collaboration with Issey Miyake. Every year the Japanese designer sent his inventions to the photo-grapher, whom he revered. And Penn, inspired by the novelty and structural virtuosity of Miyake’s art, riffed a series of equally astounding responses in return. The two artists enjoyed this lively creative matchup for fourteen years (1986–99).
