This remarkable thirteen-volume photo-album was assembled by Mary Lothrop Peabody (1837-ca. 1914), the wife of Boston banker, Colonel Oliver White Peabody (1834-1896). It lovingly documents two extended voyages, the first in 1883 to Europe (England, Germany, Italy, and France) and the second in 1888 to Europe (England, Switzerland, and Italy) and Egypt. The combined volumes contain more than 1,400 photographs that the family purchased in the course of their travels, many by prominent photographers such as Felice Beato, Francis Frith, Carlo Naya, Giorgio Sommers, and George Washington Wilson. The albums feature views of landscapes, buildings, and monuments; photographs of works of art; and portraits of European royalty and other people of note. Accompanying the pictures is a detailed travel diary written by Mary Peabody and meticulously copied in elegant script on pages with a red ruled border. Filled with keen observations and a touch of humor, the diary entries offer an intimate glimpse into the private life of a Boston Brahmin family.
