Designer Junya Watanabe Japanese

Not on view

As a designer for Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe excelled by fusing Kawakubo's confrontational approach to traditional form with his own interest in historicism. His spring 2015 collection, comprised of layered brightly colored flat, geometric shapes in synthetic leather and PVC, recalls the aesthetic of early 20th century futurist and constructivist art, specifically the work of painters Giacomo Balla and Robert and Sonia Delaunay. The two-dimensional quality of this ensemble conveyed through a trompe l'oeil rendering of a motorcycle jacket and arced and circular extensions at the shoulder and skirt transforms the wearer into a mechanical doll.
