Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he represents the facade of New York's stock exchange on Wall Street, surrounded by taller buildings, many figures on the street. He printed ninety proofs before destroying the plate.
