Jug

Nathaniel Seymour American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 704

This red earthenware jug is possibly by Hartford, Connecticut potter Nathaniel Seymour (1763-1849). The technique of incised floral decoration covered with slip is usually used on stoneware, but in this case was adopted for redware by replacing the cobalt used on white stoneware with light slip on dark redware under a clear glaze. Seymour’s pottery produced both redware and stoneware and this jug illustrates an innovative mixing of techniques between the materials and clay bodies.
