Byzantine Palace, Venice
Joseph Pennell American
Not on view
Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker decided to become an illustrator and printmaker, then worked as a clerk before gaining entrance to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He visited Europe for the first time in 1883, on commission from The Century Magazine (formerly Scribner's), and visited Italy, depicting unconventional sites and points of view. Influenced by James McNeill Whistler, Pennell here represents a gondola near the arcaded facade of a Venetian palace, with reflections filling the foreground.
