Cowan Pottery
Decorator Whitney Atchley American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774

Although much of the work produced at Cowan was made in editions and produced serially, the designer Whitney Atchley also embellished vessels forms with hand-painted decorations, many in the abstract mode like this one here. Atchley is associated with the Cleveland School, and this work—the first by this artist to enter the museum’s collection—enables us to represent this important artistic community active in the 1930s and 40s.
