This drawing, and two exhibited nearby, belong to a group identified in recent years as illustrations of The Queen of Golconda, an amusing libertine tale by Stanislas Jean de Boufflers, first published in 1761. Here, Aline, a milkmaid seduced and then abandoned by Saint Phar, has made her way to Paris and married a wealthy but elderly marquis, and now hosts a salon for men of letters.
